ANSI Z21 and Z83 -- products and standards

UL has the experience and capability to evaluate and certify products covered by a wide variety of American National Standards from the ANSI Z21/CSA and Z83/CSA series. In many cases, the standards are bi-national incorporating both U.S. and Canadian requirements. One investigation by UL can result in the certification of a product for both countries.

Some of the products evaluated by UL to these ANSI standards include:

• household cooking appliances
• commercial food service equipment
• clothes dryers
• water heaters
• vented and unvented room heaters
• hearth products
• furnaces
• outdoor cooking
• decorative and illuminating appliances

The number and scope of ANSI Z21/CSA and Z83/CSA standards is extensive and varied. Some of the more common ANSI standards UL uses to evaluate products include:

Testing logistics

• Location -- UL has fully equipped laboratories in several locations throughout North America, Europe and Asia Pacific where testing of appliances can be conducted. UL also offers a program where testing can be conducted at the equipment manufacturer's facility and witnessed on site by a UL representative. UL can bring the necessary test equipment to the site, or the manufacturer's calibrated equipment may be used. Manufacturers who elect to conduct testing at their facility must comply with UL's data acceptance program (DAP).
• Specialty testing --In some cases, a specialty product is built for a specific installation or customer. If requested, UL can conduct a field evaluation of these products and apply a UL field evaluated product Mark.
