National Commission for Efficient Energy Use (CONUEE) and UL

On September 10, 2010, the government of Mexico began finalizing the "Catalog of Equipment or Devices for which Manufacturers, Importers, Distributors and Merchants Must Provide Information on Energy Consumption" (the "Catalog").  Products listed in the catalog will be subject to mandatory energy consumption labeling outlined in the 2008 Law on Sustainable Energy Use.

The National Commission for Efficient Energy Use (CONUEE) published the final catalog in the Official Gazette on September 10, 2010, and the requirements went into effect the following day. As expected, a broad range of electronics are on the list of 186 products, ranging from televisions to modems to video consoles.  The full list is available here, in Spanish.

The Catalog now requires new energy-consuming equipment and devices distributed or sold in Mexico to include the following information as a minimum on the product in a clear and visible form:

  • Energy consumption per unit of time in operation,
  • energy consumption in standby mode per unit of time, if applicable, and
  • the quantity of product or service offered by the equipment per unit of energy consumed, where applicable.

How UL Can Help

Underwriters Laboratories (UL) and its affiliates are accredited to provide testing for products to demonstrate compliance.  UL offers Energy Efficiency Certification.  The Energy Efficiency Certification program tests and certifies products for their compliance to various energy efficiency requirements, including CONUEE.

UL Environment offers the Energy Verified Mark to those customers who complete the energy efficiency certification program.
